Education Is The Only Way To A Better Future Print E-mail

Today (07th October 2013), the MEC for Education in Limpopo, Dikeledi Magadzi in partnership with the SABC Limpopo launched what is known as the Shining Stars Matric Monday. The MEC is convinced that whoever believes in the power of education cannot starve but expect a better future. This is a campaign that involves the senior management of the province both in government and business. Members of Parliament as well as the portfolio committee on education in the provincial legislature, media personalities and business representatives clad in their school uniforms of their choice will also be part of this noble exercise. Traditional leaders such as Kgoshigadi Mothapo and Kgoshigadi Raphahlelo also took part in the campaign.

The launch started with a march around the streets of town with the premier of the province, Stanley Mathabatha also joing in the march. The marchers converged in the SABC auditorium for a formal launch. In addressing the guests and everybody who came for the launch, premier Mathabatha said: ‘We are gathered here this morning with one common purpose in our minds. We want to improve the quality of the education of our children in province. We have noted with excitement the increasing improvement of our matric results over the last years. We are committed not to allow the situation to decline. It is as a result of that commitment that we saw a need to partner with our public broadcaster, the SABC, to launch the Shining Stars Matric Monday today. This initiative is a mass movement as it calls upon all the public servants, members of the provincial legislature and Chief Executive Officers of parastatals, mayors and media personalities to rally beheind this exercise”.

The launch also serves as a count-down towards the start of matric examinations. Later this month our matriculants will be starting with their final year examinations. And it is critical that we provide a conducive environment and the positive mood leading to their starting day. Let it be noted categorically that we are serious about improving the quality of education of our learners in this province.

Mautji Pataki, the secretary of the South African Council of Churches grazed the launch and prayed for matriculants who will be sitting for their examinations shortly. The National Development Plan is a well from which we draw water of life. The Plan is a road map that outlines the kind of society South Africa wants to be in 2030. One of the Plan’s six interlinked priorities is to unite all South Africans around a common programme to achieve prosperity and equity. We embrace the use of our public private partnership to deliver efficient services. And in this context it must mean providing improved matric results.

We still remain committed to our 75% pass rate in the class of 2013. When partnering with private sector companies such as banks, mining houses and our SABC, the partnership is expected to bring innovation and efficiencies in service provision. That is the core of the National Development Plan. South Africa is a developing country and that must also happen when it comes to education matters.

As we wish our matriculants all the best of luck in their final examinations, we do so with full conviction that they will not let us down. Their predecessors made this province proud and we cannot afford to lower the bar and be judged by the lowest standards. We have put everything in place to ensure a smooth running examination process. We do not anticipate any hindrance but expect shining stars at the end of examinations.

Once more good luck to our matriculants and let us support this initiative for the benefit of the children of this province.
